Every winter, downtown Chicago transforms into a festive village when the Christkindlmarket returns to Daley Plaza. The market, inspired by German Christmas festivals, has become one of the city’s most popular holiday events. Crowds from Chicago and beyond visit each year to enjoy food, music, and handmade gifts that make the plaza feel worlds away from the busy street surrounding it.

“I love going to the Christkindlmaket with my family and friends, even though it’s mostly busy during the holiday session it’s always so fun to go downtown and see all of the festive decorations,” said Lily Kroll, a senior.

Walking through the market today feels like stepping into a small town. Rows of red and white wooden booths sell everything from handmade ornaments to carved wooden today and warm winter clothes. One of the most popular drinks at the Christkindlmarket is the warm apple cider and giant pretzels. Not only do they have food but music fills the air as choirs and bands perform throughout the session, adding to the cheerful atmosphere.

“One of my favorite foods that they serve at the Christkindlmarket would definitely be the hot chocolate but the best part is that you can buy the cutest mug to go along with it or chocolate covered fruit from Chocolate Covered Treats,” said Rashida Moosabhoy, a sophomore

This year, the Christkindlmarket introduced new events such as a special preview night and a themed “Haus of Krampus” experience, adding new excitement while still honoring German folklore and tradition. Guests can expect to enter the Timber Haus, which is reimagined as a dark, moody alpine wonderland with music, photo ops and mischievous magic. Then visitors will be able to meet and take pictures with the mythical creature Krampus.

“I had no idea that the Christkindlmarket was honoring German tradition and I think that it’s really cool to have people experience this because I am going for the first time this year. So maybe ill be able to see the Krumpus,” said Tayah Arnouk

For many students, the Christkrindlmarket is more than just a place to shop. It’s a space to slow down, make memories and experience a bit of holiday magic in the middle of the city whether students come for the food, the music, or simply to enjoy the festive atmosphere, the market remains a highlight of the session and an important part of Chicago’s winter identity.
