The viral social media app “Tiktok” has once again sparked a new form of interactive fun, a game called “Imposter”. Teens have been participating in this game all over the world. Unlike traditional mobile games, the Imposter game requires human interaction and creativity making it a game that connects communities and expands critical thinking.

The Imposter game is all about identifying a hidden “imposter” within a group of people. To play, many people use the Imposter app, which is a free app that generates a word for each person to identify except for one who the app deems the imposter of the game. Each person goes around and describes the word using hint words that don’t give away what it is. To win, the imposter must fake knowing the term by listening to other players’ clues and trying to blend in without revealing they are the imposter.

“It is my favorite game ever. I play with friends and family. It’s even more funny when the imposter says something completely unrelated to the term and you and all your peers catch them,” said Rala Azim, a freshman.

At Hinsdale Central, students play this game inside school during lunch and at home. It is a game that sparks creative ideas, shared laughs, and detective skills. After a set of quick clue rounds, players come together to vote on who they think the imposter is. If the imposter deceives the group successfully they win but if they are voted out they lose.

This game has become very in trend because all it requires is a phone and friends, many even play without the app and have a friend sit out and give everyone a term and identify an imposter.

“It’s nice to have a game to play to get us off our devices, and it is so addicting we play like 10 rounds every time it never gets boring,” said Zayna Asbahi, a senior.

Players invent clever clues and adopt funny strategies to avoid being caught. The simplicity of the game makes it easy to play in small and large groups which is why it has become a popular and well-known trend between students at Hinsdale Central with teens in the media.

“I post every imposter gameplay moment on my tik tok and they all go viral especially paired with funny captions and audio’s,” said Amira Jazayerli, a junior.

People like to record them playing to share short clips of emotionally expressive moments they share with family and friends. The imposter game is more than a game to many, it is an opportunity to unite different communities and enjoy little moments together.

Visit the tik tok app and search “the imposter game” to see people play in action.
